To Sir, with Love (by Maroo Arandilla)
"Recess is here, thy board is spread. Thanks be to God, who gives us bread". — a chant taught by my teacher in 4th grade before taking our lunch. We did the routine for the whole school year and it is one out of gazillion songs she taught that I still have in mind and heart.
School was never my favorite thing growing up. I’d rather stay at home, watch TV, play with my sister’s barbie dolls and read my favorite books. Oh yes I am well aware that (as beauty queens would say) " Education is the greatest foundation of a successful nation" ,and to that I concur. However, the feeling of doing a lot of homework, abiding by the school rules, gratifying some teachers you never like just to pass the subject, cramming for exams make me hurl.
If I have the chance to re-do everything, I would honestly DECLINE. ( well, that was my answer a minute ago).
As I am writing this, memories are gushing. Me and my classmates from elementary form a line according to height going to the canteen to grab our lunch while teasing each other, my late night rehearsals with my highschool friends, long walks, group projects and reports done over the weekend, sleepovers, endless laughter, dissapointments, puppy love, letters to your crush, slumbook since social media doesn’t exist….friendship. Yes, I’ll definitely go back and experience all those things again.
This look is for all the students and teachers( especially those who mentored me, my classmates who are today’s new educators and to my Tita Paul who was loved and missed by her students and colleagues because of her compassion and hardwork. ) Mabuhay kayo!!
Now I am wishing we had this uniform before!!! Lol!
